Decorating your arbor or pergola with lights and accessories.

In our previous entry, we discussed decorating your arbor, pergola or patio cover with various types of climbing plants as well as hanging plants from the exterior beams.

There are other ways to decorate your new addition to your home as well.

As an aside, you might consider going with a patio cover instead of a arbor or pergola.  With it's solid roof (of stained cedar or shingled to match your existing roof) it not only provides 100% shade, but offers much more latitude for branching out your design and architecture ideas.  One of these areas is gable decoration.  Here are some examples of gable decorations Hundt Construction offers.

A decoration idea that can be important to both pergolas and arbors is lighting.  One popular option in this part of the country is a ceiling fan / light combo in the center of your structure.  Another lighting option is rope lighting or strings of lights.

Outdoor wicker furniture, a round center table and weather resistant outdoor cushions can turn your backyard or patio into another room for your home.

Finally, weather resistant drapes are a popular choice.  Drapes can be gathered and tied at the corners when you want to let the breeze through and released and spread out to provide more shade or block a breeze during a meal or when the weather is cool.

Decorating your arbor or pergola with vegetation.

One of the defining features of an arbor is its ability to serve as a structure for climbing plants to grow on.

Any climbing plant will climb up your arbor if planted next to its base.  Many varieties garden_pergola_rose.jpgof Honeysuckle make good choice for a couple of reasons.  Honeysuckle is a fast growing climber and it adds a splash of color to your backyard.

Another good choice is Wisteria.  Here is an image of what Wisteria on an Arbor can look like.  Wisteria can grow 10 feet in one year and can become quite substantial.  Cheap vinyl or aluminum arbors can crumple under the its weight in just a couple of seasons.  Having a sturdy arbor professionally built by Hundt Construction will provide your home Chinese_Wisteria_Blütentrauben.jpgwith a structure that can support any vegetation growth as well as provide solid cedar beams to attach hooks for hanging several potted flowers.

Roses are another popular choice to plant near the base of an arbor or pergola.  Morning Glories are another rapid grower and, like many climbing plants, add a fragrant element to your backyard. Grapevine is another fast growing option.  Care must be given to grapevine to keep it in check, or it can quickly get out of hand.
